Muchofthepleasureofthefilmisintheperformancesfromitsfourleadactors,JacquesCharrier,PascalePetit,LaurentTerzieffandAndréaParisy,althoughonlyTerzieffisreallyconvincinginhisrole.MarcelCarnéoriginallyconsideredAlainDelonandJean-PaulBelmondoforthepartsofBobandAlainrespectively,beforeoptingforCharrierandTerzieff.Asaconsolation,CarnéofferedBelmondoasmallerpartinthefilm-alastoosmallfortheactortobenoticedbythepublic.Belmondo'sbreakthroughhadtowaituntilthefollowingyearwhenhestarredinJean-LucGodard'srevolutionaryAboutdesouffle,afilmwhichoffersaverydifferentperspectiveoftheyouthgeneration.
